Maine's Efficiency Maine program offers up to $6,000 for a new EV priced $55,000 or less, or $3,000 for a used EV priced $40,000 or less. Income-qualified buyers get more: up to $8,000 for a new EV or $4,000 for a used one. These figures include a $1,000 bonus rebate that's currently scheduled to expire September 30, 2026 โ so the amount may drop after that date. Efficiency Maine also offers separate rebates for Level 2 home charger installation.
With the federal credit expired, Maine's realistic range is $3,000 to $8,000 depending on income and whether the vehicle is new or used โ one of the more generous state programs currently active.
Federal EV Tax Credit: What Maine Buyers Need to Know (Expired Oct 2025)
The federal EV tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act (ยง30D) expired for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. It no longer applies to Maine buyers purchasing in 2026, with one narrow exception (see below). Here's what the federal credit used to offer, and what still applies to you as a Maine resident:
- New EV credit (expired): Was up to $7,500 for qualifying new battery electric vehicles bought before Oct 1, 2025.
- Used EV credit (expired): Was up to $4,000 for qualifying used EVs bought before Oct 1, 2025 from a licensed dealer, if the sale price was under $25,000.
- Income limits (new EV): $150,000 single / $225,000 head of household / $300,000 married filing jointly.
- Income limits (used EV): $75,000 single / $112,500 head of household / $150,000 married filing jointly.
- MSRP caps: $55,000 for sedans and wagons; $80,000 for SUVs, crossovers, vans, and trucks.
- Point-of-sale transfer: Since Jan 1, 2024, you can apply the credit as an instant dealer discount rather than waiting until tax filing.
Additional Maine EV Programs & Utility Incentives
Efficiency Maine also provides rebates for Level 2 home charger installation (up to $400). Central Maine Power offers time-of-use pricing for EV charging.
Always check with your local electric utility, as additional rebates for home EV charging equipment can add hundreds more in savings on top of vehicle incentives.
